Sri Aurobindo

Indian philosopher, yogi, and independence activist who developed Integral Yoga, a spiritual practice aiming to transform human consciousness and manifest a divine life on earth.

What is Sri Aurobindo?

Sri Aurobindo (1872–1950) was an Indian philosopher, yogi, poet, and nationalist leader who developed a comprehensive spiritual system known as Integral Yoga. Unlike traditional yogic paths that emphasize renunciation or transcendence, Integral Yoga embraces the totality of human experience as the field for divine transformation. Sri Aurobindo’s approach is characterized by its holistic nature and aims for a fulfilled and spiritually transformed life on earth, seeking not escape from the material world but its conscious divinization. His philosophy proposes that humanity stands at an evolutionary threshold, capable of developing what he termed “supramental consciousness”—a level of awareness beyond the mental plane that would allow matter and spirit to unite in a transformed existence.

Origins & Lineage

Sri Aurobindo was born Aurobindo Ghose in Calcutta on 15 August 1872. At age seven, he was taken to England with his two elder brothers for education and lived there for fourteen years. He attended St. Paul’s School in London in 1884 and in 1890 went to King’s College, Cambridge, where he studied for two years. In 1890 he passed the open competition for the Indian Civil Service, but failed to present himself at the riding examination and was disqualified. He obtained an appointment in the Baroda Service and arrived in India in February 1893.

For thirteen years (1893–1906), Sri Aurobindo worked in the Baroda State administration and as a professor. In 1906, at age thirty-four, he moved to Kolkata as Principal of Bengal National College but resigned soon after to participate openly in India’s struggle for freedom, becoming a leader of the Nationalist Party with his editorials in the daily Bande Mataram. His one-year detention from 1908 to 1909 proved transformative, during which he underwent decisive spiritual experiences that established the course of his future work.

In April 1910, he reached Pondicherry, then a French colony, and dedicated himself to his spiritual and philosophical pursuits. In 1914, after four years of secluded yoga, he started a monthly philosophical magazine called Arya, which ceased publication in 1921. His spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa (born in Paris on 21 February 1878), came to Pondicherry on 29 March 1914, and finally settled there in 1920. Sri Aurobindo considered her his spiritual equal and collaborator; after 24 November 1926, when he retired into seclusion, he left it to her to plan, build, and run the ashram.

How It’s Practiced

During his forty years in Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo evolved Integral Yoga, a method of spiritual practice whose aim is a spiritual realization that not only liberates consciousness but transforms human nature. The practice proceeds not through any set mental teaching or prescribed forms of meditation, but through aspiration, self-concentration, and self-opening to the Divine Power.

The practice emphasizes several foundational qualities: inner quietude, sincerity, faith, and wide consciousness. Unlike traditional yogic paths that focus on withdrawal from the world or liberation of the individual soul alone, Integral Yoga aims at total transformation of human nature: physical, vital, mental, and spiritual. Practitioners work with all aspects of their being—rather than suppressing desires or denying the body—to allow divine consciousness to descend and transform everyday existence.

Central to the philosophy is the concept of involution (Spirit plunging into the “Inconscience” of Matter) followed by evolution (Spirit progressively manifesting back through the material world). According to Sri Aurobindo, man is a “transitional being” in an intermediate stage of evolution, destined to unfold the Spirit and manifest Supramental consciousness. The goal is not personal salvation but a collective evolutionary leap for humanity.

Sri Aurobindo Today

In Pondichéry, Sri Aurobindo founded a community of spiritual seekers which took shape as the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1926, entrusting the work to Mirra Alfassa (“the Mother”). The ashram eventually attracted seekers from many countries throughout the world. Sri Aurobindo died on 5 December 1950 of uremia. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President Rajendra Prasad praised him for his contribution to Yogic philosophy and the independence movement.

Today, seekers encounter Sri Aurobindo’s teachings through several channels. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry remains a living spiritual community where visitors can attend meditation sessions, study his works in the library, and visit the Samadhi (tomb) where his and the Mother’s bodies rest. In 1968, the Mother established Auroville, an experimental township dedicated to human unity and evolution. Auroville is now a growing community of over 3,300 people from 60 nations, with the stated purpose of realizing human unity.

His major written works remain widely studied: The Life Divine (1939), his main prose work exploring the evolutionary philosophy underlying Integral Yoga; Savitri (an epic poem of nearly 24,000 lines), The Synthesis of Yoga (a comprehensive treatise on spiritual practices), and Essays on the Gita. Sri Aurobindo’s ideas influenced the thinking of Michael Murphy and the human potential movement. American philosopher Ken Wilber called him “India’s greatest modern philosopher sage”.

Common Misconceptions

Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga is often conflated with hatha yoga or modern postural yoga, but it bears little resemblance to contemporary yoga studios. It involves no fixed asana sequences or pranayama routines in the conventional sense—it is a comprehensive spiritual practice encompassing every aspect of life.

Another misconception is that Sri Aurobindo advocated escapism or world-rejection. He explicitly rejected the traditional Indian approach of striving for moksha (liberation from samsara) as a means of reaching transcendental planes of existence. His vision centered on transformation of earthly life, not flight from it.

Sri Aurobindo is sometimes portrayed solely as a mystic who withdrew from the world. In fact, he was a Cambridge-educated political revolutionary who spent years as one of India’s most influential nationalist leaders before turning to spiritual work. His spirituality emerged from—not in opposition to—his engagement with history and politics.

Finally, while the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville are associated with his teachings, neither functions as a traditional guru-disciple lineage. There are no formal initiations, required practices, or hierarchical spiritual authority in the conventional sense.

How to Begin

For those new to Sri Aurobindo’s work, The Life Divine is the foundational philosophical text, though its density can be challenging. Many begin instead with Integral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo’s Teaching and Method of Practice, a compilation of his letters to disciples that offers practical guidance. The Synthesis of Yoga provides a systematic overview of the spiritual path.

For poetry readers, Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol is considered his masterwork—an epic that uses the Mahabharata legend as a framework to explore the soul’s journey and humanity’s evolutionary destiny.

Practical engagement is available through visiting the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, India, where exhibitions, libraries, and meditation spaces are open to the public. Auroville, 12 kilometers away, offers volunteer opportunities and workshops. Both locations maintain guest houses for extended stays.

Several centers worldwide offer study circles focused on Sri Aurobindo’s writings, typically meeting to read and discuss passages from The Life Divine or The Synthesis of Yoga. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram website provides free access to his complete works in digital format, and numerous volumes are available through Lotus Press in North America.
