Brennan Healing Science

A holistic energy healing modality developed by physicist Barbara Brennan combining hands-on techniques, High Sense Perception, and psycho-spiritual processes to work with the human energy field.

What is Brennan Healing Science?

Brennan Healing Science (BHS) is a holistic healing modality based on the Human Energy-Consciousness System and its relationship to health and disease. Practitioners are trained to interact with a client’s energy field in a deeply intuitive way, energetically supporting the client into alignment toward healing, as well as clearing, balancing, and renewing the energy field that supports physical and emotional health. The system combines hands-on healing techniques with spiritual and psychological processes touching every aspect of life.

Unlike purely energetic modalities or psychotherapeutic approaches alone, Brennan Healing Science integrates High Sense Perception (HSP)—the practitioner’s developed ability to perceive subtle energy patterns—with structured healing techniques and deep psychological work. The methodology centers on a seven-layer model of the energy field, each layer being structured of differing frequencies and kinds of energy and performing different functions. Chakras are viewed as transformers that receive and process universal energy, as well as enabling expression and healthy functioning of the individual’s own consciousness and psycho-physical make-up.

Origins & Lineage

Barbara Ann Brennan (February 19, 1939 – October 3, 2022) was an American writer, spiritual healer, businesswoman and teacher working in the field of energy healing. Brennan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1962 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and two years later received her master’s degree in Atmospheric Physics from the same institution. She then went on to spend six years working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

She was strongly influenced by Eva and John Pierrakos, who founded a system for self-transformation called the Pathwork, drawing on the ideas of Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen. Brennan worked with the Pierrakos, and became a Pathwork Helper and Core Energetics therapist. She completed a two-year program in Therapeutic Counselling at the Community of the Whole Person in Washington, D.C., followed by a three-year program in Core Energetics at the Institute for Core Energetics in New York City in 1978 and a five-year program in Spiritual Healership at the Phoenicia Pathwork Center. Brennan also took seminars with and was influenced by Rev. Rosalyn L. Bruyere.

She developed her own private healing practice in 1977 and then established a training programme to teach others. In 1982, Barbara founded the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Her first book, Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing through the Human Energy Field, was published by Bantam in 1987. The book is considered a “classic” in the field of spiritual healing, with reputedly over one million copies in print in 22 languages.

How It’s Practiced

A typical BHS session begins with a discussion about the client’s concerns, goals, and health history. The practitioner then conducts a hands-on or hands-off energy healing session, during which they assess and harmonize the client’s energy field. This may involve light touch, visualization, and energy flow techniques. The session concludes with a discussion of insights or recommendations for further healing.

Practitioners work with what Brennan identified as the seven primary layers of the human energy field (also called the aura). The odd-numbered levels are structured fields of standing, scintillating light beams. The first, third, fifth, and seventh levels of this field are structured in a specific form. The even-numbered levels—the second, fourth, and sixth—are filled with formless substance/energy. Each layer corresponds to different aspects of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual functioning.

In her second book, Light Emerging, Brennan expanded her model of human subtle energies by adding the dimension of “intentionality” called “hara.” Hara holds the human body in material manifestation until the life purpose is fulfilled. When the hara is healthy, the individual acts naturally and effortlessly to fulfill his or her life purpose. The hara is the foundation for the human energy field (HEF), or aura. Because of this relationship, healing hara is considered especially powerful for healing the auric field and, thereby, the physical body.

Brennan created a type of energy healing techniques that she called “full spectrum healing” to work on the seven layers of the human energy field or auras. Techniques include chelation (clearing and charging the field), structural alignment, energy transfer, and what Brennan termed “spiritual surgery”—advanced work on the fifth layer of the field.

Brennan Healing Science Today

The school has been located in Florida since 2000, and is licensed by the State of Florida Commission for Independent Education. Barbara Brennan School has 2700 graduates worldwide, over 224 teachers, and 188 Brennan Integration Practitioners. After Brennan’s retirement and subsequent death in 2022, the school continues under new leadership.

As a graduate of either the four-year Bachelor of Science Degree or Professional Studies Diploma Programs of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing (“BBSH”), the BHS Practitioner has completed an intensive study and practice of personal transformation, energy awareness and High Sense Perception, hands-on healing techniques, professional practice, creative arts, integrative care, and awareness of the connections between mind, body and emotions. The curriculum is built around four areas: healing science, awakening (self-exploration and awareness), creativity, and professionalism. Students not only learn a broad perspective on healing, drawing deeply from the Pierrakoses’ work, but are introduced to a broad range of psychic practices from meditation to channeling.

Training programs now exist globally, with four-year schools in Florida, the United Kingdom, and California; three-year training in Japan; two-year training in Australia; and one-year trainings in New York, Colorado, Minnesota, France, Germany, and Italy. Workshops and introductory events allow seekers to experience the methodology without enrolling in full certification programs.

Common Misconceptions

Brennan Healing Science is not a quick certification or weekend training—professional practitioners complete a rigorous multi-year curriculum comparable to graduate-level education. It is not Reiki, though both work with energy; BHS employs a distinct methodology, terminology, and training structure developed specifically by Brennan.

Brennan Healing Science is considered complementary medicine and honors all other medical and healing traditions. Energy healing is not intended to replace traditional medical care. BHS practitioners do not diagnose medical conditions in the conventional sense, though they may perceive energetic imbalances that correspond to physical or emotional states.

The methodology requires personal transformation work alongside technical skill development. Barbara Brennan’s vision included not only learned skills but college level Anatomy and Physiology, supervised practical feedback, professional ethics, and honing the ability to work with your own spirit guides. She also required each student to undergo their own personal psychotherapy exploration, working with a psychotherapist or counselor, in order to understand the hidden psycho-emotional forces in their lives. This distinguishes it from purely technique-based energy modalities.

While Brennan’s physics background informed her systematic approach, BHS is not a scientifically validated medical treatment in the conventional sense. It operates within the framework of complementary and alternative medicine.

How to Begin

For those exploring Brennan Healing Science, begin with Barbara Brennan’s foundational text, Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field (1987), which introduces the seven-layer energy field model, chakra system, and basic healing concepts. Her second book, Light Emerging: The Journey of Personal Healing (1993), expands into hara and core star dimensions. Core Light Healing (2017) completes the trilogy with advanced concepts.

Experiential learning is essential. Seek a session with a certified Brennan Healing Science Practitioner—graduates listed through the Barbara Brennan School of Healing network. Attend introductory workshops offered by the school to experience the methodology directly before committing to formal training. For those drawn to professional practice, investigate the four-year degree programs or shorter regional trainings, keeping in mind the significant time, financial, and personal commitment required.
